| Matewan, West Virginia is where the entire concept of the trails system started. Known as " The Birthplace of the Hatfield McCoy trail system ", Buffalo Mountain was also the first trail system open to the public. Matewan also carries with it a great historical story. The Matewan massacre was where a shootout between the miners and the coal company took place. The miners were seeking a union and the company wouldn't allow it. The movie " Matewan " (available on DVD) was made about this event. This event is the reason why Matewan is a Federal Land Mark town. Matewan is a quiet and ATV friendly town. It sits on the border with Buskirk Kentucky, also ATV friendly. When you visit Matewan, you make new friends, have a great time riding, and leave with the desire to come back. |
